Chapter 142: Uneasiness
Rebecca’s alarm blared, shaking her from a fitful sleep. She groaned, rubbing her eyes, the heaviness of dread pressing down on her chest. She knew today would be rough; the anger in Alexander’s messages last night had been impossible to ignore, even if she had deliberately avoided opening them. She had also ignored Helena’s attempts to reach out. Rebecca wasn’t ready to face the disappointment she knew awaited her.
She forced herself out of bed, each movement deliberate, as if she could somehow delay the inevitable by moving slower. Her mind raced as she went through the motions of getting ready—showering, dressing, applying makeup. She opted for her sharpest outfit, hoping that looking strong on the outside would help her feel more confident on the inside. But as she looked at her reflection in the mirror, all she saw was a woman teetering on the edge of a cliff, ready to fall.
