Chapter 65: The Hunter’s Oath
"What are you doing here?" The old woman demanded as she gripped Jacob’s arm with surprising strength, interrupting his thoughts before he could even question her presence.
"I’m here on a mission," Jacob replied, his voice laced with frustration. He tried to wrench his arm free from the old woman’s iron grip, but it was no use. For someone so frail-looking, she had an unyielding strength. He shifted his weight to his left leg, his gaze slipping back to the stage, unable to tear his eyes from the beautiful vampire who was singing.
"Is she the one they sent you to kill this time?" she asked, her tone almost accusatory. "Yes, but—"
Before he could explain, she cut him off, her voice harsh and urgent. "No! You can't kill her! I won't allow it. That woman has never harmed anyone. She’s a vampire, yes, but her music… her voice has the power to heal, to soothe. She brings light to the souls of mortals and immortals alike. There’s no darkness in her."
