It all made sense now. The herbs, the dried plants hanging from the ceiling, and the faint scent of medicine that filled the air. Nick wasn’t just any pack member—he was the Pack's doctor. The one responsible for healing. Yet what puzzled me most wasn’t his role; it was the way he treated me. A slave. His kindness seemed out of place in a world where people like me were beneath even basic human decency.
I glanced at the woman kneeling in front of Nick, her head bowed low, grief hanging over her like a dark cloud. Her sorrow was palpable, her posture heavy with it. Whatever had brought her to Nick's doorstep was eating her alive.
The child must be special. Maybe even an only child. I thought, piecing together the woman's silent agony. The weight of her heartache stirred something deep inside me, but I didn’t allow myself to feel it fully. I had enough troubles of my own.
“Let’s go,” Nick’s voice cut through my thoughts, snapping my attention back to him.
