"How's she? Is she still unconscious?" Mark asked Canaan when he met him in the waiting area.
"She's awake now."
Mark exhaled in relief, raising a silent thanks to the heavens.
"What about Nora? Has she been arrested?"
Canaan kept quiet, and Mark narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
"What did you do? Don't tell me you let her go scott-free?"
"I ended things with her," he said in a quiet voice.
"And?"
"Nothing," Canaan answered. His throat bobbed as he swallowed.
"So, you pardoned her despite what she did."
"I can't throw her in jail. She is a woman I loved once."
"Out of duty, not by your volition," Mark expressed explicitly.
"But I..."
"Ending things with her would only incite her rage. She did what she did to get you back. Now, you've given her a solid reason to loathe Layla.
She had luck on her side today that you were there to save her. You may be unable to save her from Nora's next attempt. You should have had her imprisoned."
"I will handle this..."
