CHAPTER 20 A GAME OF CHARADE
Frederick Wellington, heir to the Duke of Wellington, stood at the window of his ancestral home, his eyes scanning the drive that led up to the main entrance. The morning sun had already burned away the early-morning mist, and the air had the crispness of an autumn day.
Suddenly, a glint of polished chrome caught his eye, and he watched as a black car rolled up the driveway, its tires crunching over the gravel. His brows furrowed slightly, wondering who this unexpected visitor could be.
Frederick watched as Mr. Fitzwilliam, followed by his wife, stepped out of the car, their shoes sinking into the gravel as they made their way towards the house. The woman, dressed in a smart suit and hat, radiated confidence and poise. Behind them, a young woman emerged, her posture straight, her features demure, and yet there was a sparkle in her eyes that hinted at a lively spirit.
Frederick's curiosity was piquef. He remained at the window, his gaze fixed on the trio as they approached.
