CHAPTER 18 THE ARRANGEMENT
Mr. Fitzwilliam sat in the back seat of the sedan, his mood as dark and stormy as the clouds gathering on the horizon. The family's journey to Somerset had been derailed by Jane's disappearance, and his fury was barely contained within the confines of the vehicle.
"She's disgraced us, humiliated our family name," he snarled, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. "Disappearing like a ghost, without a word of warning. She's gone too far this time."
Mrs. Fitzwilliam, sitting beside her husband, was wracked with worry.
Her fingers tapped furiously on the screen of her smartphone, her eyes flicking back and forth between the numbers and the empty highway stretching out before them. She'd dialed Jane's number countless times, but each call had gone unanswered, Jane's absence a silent, painful reminder of the tension and anger that now gripped the family.
