The salty spray of the ocean stung Jane's face as she held onto the railing of the rickety schooner. Beside her, Lucian adjusted the course, his new beard catching the golden sunset.
"Whoa, Captain Growly-Face!" Hyacinth chirped from behind them, her voice dripping with amusement. "Didn't know you were hiding that under there."
Lucian glanced back, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "Thanks, Hyacinth. Though I can't say the same about your choice of footwear for a pirate ship."
Hyacinth, perched precariously on a stack of crates, looked down at her sparkling high heels with a mock frown. "Nonsense! They add a touch of… glamour to the otherwise mundane task of sailing."
Jane chuckled, shaking her head at Hyacinth's unwavering theatricality. Despite her reservations about Hyacinth tagging along, Jane had to admit the woman's presence was a welcome distraction from the looming danger ahead.
