Lucian led Jane out of the cacophony of the Rusty Flagon, the cool night air a welcome change from the stale stench of the tavern. They navigated a maze of darkened alleyways until they reached a small, unassuming inn tucked away on a quiet street.
"This is Martha's place," Lucian explained, pushing open the creaking door. A warm glow emanated from within, casting long shadows across the worn wooden floor.
Inside, a plump woman with a head full of silver curls greeted them with a booming laugh. "Lucian, my boy! Back so soon? And who might this lovely lady be?"
Lucian shot Jane a fleeting glance, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. "This, my dear Martha," he said with a playful drawl, "is a duchess in need of a… change of wardrobe."
Jane bristled at the blatant lie, but before she could protest, Martha cackled with delight. "A duchess, you say? Well, ain't that somethin'! And you, Lucian, bringing home a wife? About time, you old rake!"
