“You need to rest more, Cecilia,” the doctor said firmly, his gaze shifting between her and Sarah, both of whom sat in stiff silence. “Stress is not your friend right now, and you should focus on keeping your mind calm. The baby’s due any day now.” Cecilia shifted uncomfortably in her chair, hands automatically moving to rub her swollen belly. Her cheeks were flushed, whether, from the heat of the hospital room or the mounting anxiety, it was hard to tell. She glanced nervously at Sarah, who had been uncharacteristically quiet during the consultation. The doctor adjusted his glasses, sighing softly. “Make sure you keep up with your medication and, when you feel any contractions or pain, come straight to the hospital. No delays.” Cecilia nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “I understand,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her throat felt tight, Sarah leaned forward, her fingers clasped together tightly in her lap, the tension evident in the way her knuckles turned white.
