Eleanor rubbed her temples, a shadow of melancholy in her eyes. Until now, she had remained unaware of the depths of Susan’s past. On Pear Blossom Island, she had tried to broach the subject, but Susan always deflected, evading any discussion of her history. Eleanor, respecting her privacy, never pressed her for details.
