In the Hampton family's grand hall, guests arrived steadily, filling the room with chatter and laughter. Henry Hampton, Old Master Hampton's eldest son, and his family were abroad and could not attend.
The spotlight, therefore, was on his second son, Oliver Hampton, whose family had arrived early. Oliver's growing influence in the Hampton family was evident as many guests made a point to greet him, adding to the prestige of his household. The air was thick with the palpable pride of his daughters, Abigail and Hazel.
