"I don't want to know," Percy said.
Samuel was accustomed to his friend's flat, monotonous tone of speech. "I just overheard someone say that the mayor's family is dining here. Want to take a guess who stepped out of the mayor's car?"
Percy fumbled with his lighter, trying several times to light a cigarette and failing. For once, a flicker of emotion crossed his usually stoic face. He brushed Samuel's hand off before finally managing to light it. "Doesn't concern me."
Samuel was too excited to stop and pressed on, lowering his voice as if sharing a scandalous secret. "Dude, you won't believe this. I saw Sydney getting out of the car with the mayor's wife! And get this—she called her 'Mom'! Holy crap, Sydney is the mayor's daughter!"
He leaned in closer, his voice tinged with disbelief. "Man, who knew she was hiding something this big?"
"Hey! Samuel, are you talking about me behind my back again?" Suddenly, a familiar voice rose behind their backs.
