The next day, morning light filtered through the sheer white curtains, casting shadows on the wooden floor. Adeline rubbed her swollen eyes and sat up in bed. She hadn't slept much the entire night.
After crying her eyes out in the middle of the night, there was no need to check the mirror to know that her eyes were now puffy like walnuts. The phone on her nightstand buzzed. It was Rose.
Adeline answered, and Rose's cheerful voice came through. "My sweetie pie, how was your intimate time with Mr. Lambert last night without us interrupting? Did you have a nice birthday?"
"Don't even mention that jerk," Adeline said, her mood souring at the memory yesterday.
Rose asked, "What happened? Did you two fight again?"
