Chapter 7
As night fell, Yvonne laid in bed and drifted off to sleep.
She had a dream. She went back to that day three years ago when Fiona grinned gleefully at her and flaunted her baby bump.
“Sis, I’m pregnant. The kid belongs to Jackson!”
All she did was slap her, but Fiona ended up suffering a miscarriage. She had been both scared and angry as she stared at the blood on the floor.
“Slap!” She recalled the loud sound of a slap, followed by the voice of her mother-in-law, Jade Lewis, screaming and cursing at her. “Just because you can’t get pregnant, it doesn’t mean everyone else can’t too”
“These are divorce papers. Please read and sign them!” That was the lawyer’s apathetic voice.
“President Miller is a very busy man. Stop stalling and sign them now. That way will be better for everyone!”
He was the man whom she had loved with all her heart for five years. He was the man she was prepared to spend the rest of her life with!
Intense pain tugged at Yvonne’s heart as sweat coated her entire body. Yvonne’s eyes opened widely.
It had been three years, but these dreams still haunted her. Yvonne massaged her head as she sat up and grabbed her phone from the bedside table to check the time. It was four in the morning.
She could not fall asleep again after being woken up by the nightmare. Her entire body was soaking wet with sweat, so she got up and took a quick shower before going down to make breakfast in the kitchen.
Zachary might look the part of an extravagant gentleman, but he was a very meticulous person. He had many things to take care of since he had arrived at South City. He was a swift and decisive person who did not appreciate any delays. As the president’s assistant, she did not dare slack off.
Yvonne hurried down the stairs after she had finished her breakfast as quickly as possible. The place she lived in was a rundown alley and the place was so old that several of the streetlights no longer functioned. Yvonne used her memory of the place to stumble through the alley and arrive at the entrance. When she saw a number 28 bus driving towards her, she immediately dashed forward and did not notice a luxurious, black-colored car parked nearby.
The car’s window rolled down and revealed Jackson watching her run across to board the bus with a cigarette between his fingers. His expression was serious as he looked at Yvonne go up the bus.
He did not know if he should feel surprised or any other emotion now that a person he had not heard from for three years reappeared all of a sudden.
Yvonne Yates, it was good that you had reappeared!
Yvonne rushed into the office. She had been exceptionally early today, and no one else had arrived yet. She entered Zachary’s office and tidied up a little before making him a cup of tea. Then, she sat down and turned on her computer.
She heard footsteps coming from the door as she finished sorting out Zachary’s schedule for the day. Zachary had arrived with his special assistant, Felix Zimmer.
Zachary was surprised to see Yvonne so early. He had a smirk on his face as he said, “Hey, Yvonne Yates, did you think I would give you a higher bonus if you came in earlier? You can stop dreaming! I would rather spend money on a beautiful girl than waste my resources and give it to an ugly girl like you!”
Yvonne knew Zachary to be a harsh person from the start ever since she started working for him. Although she was here on Yosef’s recommendation, she was still worried she would get harassed by the flirtatious man. Prevention is always better than cure, which was why she always dressed conservatively and did not apply any makeup when she was around Zachary. Moreover, she donned a pair of old-fashioned black frame glasses because she knew Zachary hated women who wore glasses.
All these were reasons why Zachary had never spare a good look at her in the three months she had spent working for him. He also spoke rudely and harshly to her.
Although Zachary had called her ugly and incompetent more than a hundred times, Yvonne had already trained herself to not let the words get to her. She is immune to Zachary’s insults by now, but Felix felt that he was going overboard with his insults.
He tried to smooth things over by saying, “President Quimby, I heard Jackson Miller is getting engaged soon. What gift should we bring along to the wedding?”
Yvonne was stunned when she heard that. She raised her head to look at Felix.
