Ethan closed in on me step by step. I looked at him in fear, trembling like a fragile kitten.
Without warning, he pulled me tightly into his arms, his voice frantic. "What happened? Tell me, what happened?"
I screamed and lost consciousness.
When I woke up, the room was a mess. Lucas was sitting beside my bed, and I could see that he had a few injuries on his body.
"I leave for just a moment, and this happens. Summer, where’s that boldness you used to deal with me?"
I forced a bitter smile. "Lucas, I envy the old me—bold, fearless, and carefree. But people change. I’m afraid of dying. I’m just an ordinary person."
Lucas held me close, softly comforting me. "Don’t worry. I’ve already looked into it. I won’t let those who hurt you get away with it."
In Lucas’s arms, I found a kind of quiet peace, a tranquility I had never known before.
With him, I felt safer than ever.
