I'd totally be alone if Lisa left too. Life was always a revolving door of people—parents, relatives, friends, even spouses—coming and going. But I wasn't ready for Lisa to walk away as well.
"No. I just want to rest more. They put me on leave whenever it suits them and bring me back whenever they feel like it. I'm not someone they can push around that easily," Lisa said.
I smiled at her words. "Well, Dr. Carline. It looks like you're making things tough for them since they upset you, huh?"
"Exactly. Otherwise, they'll be the first to bail on me if something goes wrong again." Lisa was always level-headed. She approached work the same way she approached love.
"Aren't you worried they won't let you back in if you push too hard?" I asked, grinning.
Lisa filled up a glass of water for me. "I can always look for somewhere else if they don't want me."
She leaned in close, her nose almost touching mine. "You really think I'm scared of being without a place to go?"
