Chapter 424
Chris didn't say anything more, but I had already guessed one of Jewel's conditions.
"Her condition is to become Mrs. Gildon, right?"
As soon as I spoke, Chris looked up at me, seemingly surprised that I knew everything so well.
"You seem to know her quite well," he remarked mockingly after a moment. His words weren't hurtful, but they were filled with sarcasm.
Jewel was a mistress, the woman who took my man. The implication of his words was that I must have studied her carefully, as if strategizing against her.
"You're overthinking it. I don't know her because I care about her; I simply know what she's after. It's not that I understand her, but her actions make it clear that she's greedy for wealth and luxury," I replied.
Just as I finished speaking, the dark sky suddenly brightened.
All along, I had thought that the transition from night to dawn was a slow and gradual process, but now I realized it happened in an instant. No wonder poets described daybreak as "dawn breaking."
