Jasmine's hands trembled as she placed the last framed photograph on the shelf. The image of her and Marco on their wedding day stared back at her, a reminder of happier times. She sighed, pushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear, when her phone suddenly buzzed.
Marco's name flashed on the screen. Her heart leaped as she answered, "Marco? Is everything okay?"
"Jasmine," Marco's voice was barely above a whisper, urgency lacing every word. "Listen carefully. I'm in Trujillo. I'm in danger."
"What? Marco, what's going on?" Jasmine's voice rose in panic.
"Shh, keep your voice down," Marco hissed. "I can't explain everything now. You need to leave Peru immediately. Go back to the States."
"But-"
"No buts, Jasmine. I've hidden $100,000 for you. The account details are in the false bottom of your jewelry box. The one I gave you for your birthday. You remember the combination, right?"
Jasmine's mind raced. "Yes, but Marco-"
