CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED AND NINE – A FRIEND IN THE FAMILY
A soft knock on the door startled her from her thoughts. Cautiously, she approached. "Who is it?"
"It's me, Elena," came the reply. "May I come in for a moment?"
Relieved it wasn't Carlos, Jasmine opened the door. Elena entered, her face etched with concern.
"I wanted to check on you," Elena said, closing the door behind her. "I saw how uncomfortable you were at dinner, especially with Carlos."
Jasmine sighed, sinking onto the edge of her bed. "Is he always like that?"
Elena's lips tightened into a grim line. "Unfortunately, yes. Carlos has always been... entitled. Growing up in this environment hasn't helped. I'd advise you to keep your distance from him."
"Believe me, I intend to," Jasmine replied fervently.
Elena sat beside her, placing a comforting hand on Jasmine's arm. "I know this must all be overwhelming for you. When I first came here as a bride, I felt so lost and alone. But you're not alone, Jasmine. Some of us understand what you're going through."
