Shelmaine said a tad coldly, "This isn't a date. It's just a normal dinner."
"Got it," Julien said.
The tension in the air robbed Shelmaine of her appetite. She gave up eating altogether after a few more bites.
On the way back, Julien drove while Shelmaine sat quietly in the passenger seat. She did not utter a word, though he cast her furtive sidelong glances every once in a while. Eventually, she closed her eyes and leaned into her seat, looking exhausted.
When Julien pulled up outside her apartment building, he got out and opened the car door for her. She thanked him softly.
He couldn't help asking, "Is what I'm doing too much for you?"
"Honestly, yes." The corners of her eyes were red as she confessed, "It made me think about some bad times. When Samuel and I got married, it happened so quickly that neither of us were ready for it.
"I don't know if you've heard about it, but I don't want to make the same mistake again. Until we're official, I'd prefer it if you didn't joke
