Helen couldn't understand how Julien dared to come, and why James would allow him in. She was utterly baffled.
Julien stayed in the hospital room for a long time, so long that Helen could no longer pretend to be asleep. Slowly, she opened her eyes, her gaze meeting his. For a moment, neither spoke, until Julien broke the silence. "Lennie, are you feeling any discomfort?"
"Why are you here?" Helen asked, unable to comprehend his presence.
"I came to see you," Julien replied softly, his heart aching as he held her hand tightly against his cheek. "Why would you do something so foolish? What if Mr. and Mrs. Sanders hadn't found you in time…"
She turned her face away. "It has nothing to do with you."
"How could it have nothing to do with me, Lennie?"
"Julien, just let me go," Helen said, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her face. "I'm begging you. Every time I see you, it feels like I'm drowning in a whirlpool of pain. I can't do this anymore."
