Helen didn't wait for Julien to respond. She stepped out of the car and walked briskly toward her house. Her pace quickened with each step as if slowing down might give Julien the chance to catch up. If that happened, she wasn't sure she could stay firm or keep her resolve from wavering.
To maintain the last shred of self-control, she had to keep moving. No hesitation.
She couldn't afford to repeat the same mistakes.
Helen had already poured her heart and soul into loving him once. That one time had drained her completely.
When she got home, Marcus was sitting on the couch playing chess with James, but Amelia wasn't there.
"Lennie's back," James said when Helen entered.
Marcus looked over and greeted her, "Lennie, done with work?"
"Dad, where's Mom?" Helen asked as she changed her shoes.
"Your mom went to do some beauty treatments with a friend. Not sure when she'll be back, though," James replied.
She nodded. "You two carry on. I'll head to my room."
