As Helen walked back to the court after changing, she drew quite a few glances—most of them from men.
Julien himself had been drawn to her beauty and elegance at first. Deep down, he couldn't escape the flaws ingrained in him as a man—dark, selfish, and primal. Even if given the chance to choose again, he knew he wouldn't stop himself.
Midway through their game, they unexpectedly ran into someone Julien knew—Connor Hayes, a male friend who had also come to play. Connor exchanged a few words with Julien before glancing at Helen.
"Your friend?" Connor asked.
Julien glanced at Helen. "Yeah."
Helen opened her mouth to speak, but a sharp pang struck her chest, like a needle prick.
"From a distance, I thought it was Josie," Connor commented politely.
He then added, "My girlfriend and I got here late, and all the courts are taken. Do you mind if we join you for a doubles match?"
Julien turned to Helen. "Is that okay with you?"
Helen smiled graciously. "Sure, I don't mind."
