"Does your husband not have a job? You work outside while he takes care of the home?"
Shelmaine froze for a moment at the question. "No."
It wasn't that Samuel didn't work, it was just that he spent more time taking care of their child. Shelmaine had endured a tough ten months of pregnancy and childbirth, but she never complained, nor did she blame him for anything. Instead, Samuel had taken it upon himself to handle most of the childcare, giving her time to rest and recover.
She didn't elaborate beyond denying the assumption. Her brief response left others speculating that her husband was unemployed and stayed home to care for the baby.
A few of her classmates exchanged subtle, knowing glances, but Shelmaine paid no attention to them. She sipped her juice calmly, her expression indifferent.
"How old is your child, Shelmaine?"
A married classmate with kids of her own struck up a conversation. At this reunion, most were in their late 20s or early 30s, and very few remained single.
