Chapter 67: Confronting the Truth
The doorbell pealed insistently into the silent house, its staccato135 rhythm duplicated by the racing of Nathan's heart. He still stood on the porch, his fist raised to pound again, when the door opened to reveal a groggy Sarah.
"Nathan?" she blinked, tightening the belt of her robe. "It's 11 p.m. What on earth?"
"I want to know, Sarah," Nathan interrupted, his voice rough with emotion. "About Olivia. Her illness. Tell me everything."
Sarah went from confused to skeptical. "Nathan, I really don't think—"
"Please," he begged, his voice breaking. "I saw her tonight at the exhibition. I overheard. God, Sarah, why didn't anyone tell me she had cancer?"
The silence thereafter was thunderously loud. Sarah's face softened—a mix of pity and resignation. Stepping back and opening the door a bit more, she said, "You'd better come in."
