CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY NINE - CHAINS AND SHADOWS
For a long moment, no one spoke. They simply lay there, breath coming in ragged gasps, minds struggling to process their narrow escape. Finally, Captain Donovan broke the silence.
"Is everyone alright?" he asked, his voice hoarse.
There were nods all around. They were battered, exhausted, and shellshocked, but they were alive.
As they gathered themselves, Mara spotted something in the near distance – the dark mouth of a cave, half-hidden behind a stand of scraggly pines.
"Look," she said, pointing. "We can shelter there for the night."
They made their way to the cave, moving slowly now that the immediate danger had passed. The cave was deep and dry, offering welcome protection from the elements. As Clarissa and Nina settled Greg into a comfortable position, Mara and Captain Donovan worked on starting a small fire near the entrance of the cave.
