CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FOUR - When Old Memories Stir
Cassius nodded, meeting her eyes. "Am I being too cautious? Should I give her a chance?"
Mara took a moment to consider her words carefully. "I think... I think Clarissa is genuinely trying to make amends. The gala, this donation... these aren't small gestures. She's putting real effort into reconnecting with you."
Cassius sighed, sinking down onto the couch. Mara sat beside him, taking his hand in hers.
"But," she continued, "your caution is understandable. You've been hurt before, and it's okay to protect yourself. Maybe the key is to take it slow. Small steps, you know?"
Cassius squeezed her hand, a small smile touching his lips. "What would I do without you?"
Mara leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. "Let's hope you never have to find out. So, what do you think? Maybe that coffee Clarissa suggested?"
Cassius was quiet for a long moment, his thumb tracing circles on the back of Mara's hand. Finally, he nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm ready for that."
