CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED SEVENTEEN - The Descent of Betrayal
Elena's eyes narrowed. "Mr. Keppler, I'm not sure you understand the position you're in. The decision has effectively been made. This meeting is a formality."
"A formality that we will observe properly," Cassius insisted, his voice firm. "Board members, I propose we take a recess to individually review these documents. We'll reconvene in one hour to discuss and vote."
Murmurs of agreement rose from several board members, relieved to have a moment to process the shocking turn of events. Elena opened her mouth to protest, but Cassius cut her off.
"Unless you have objections to us following proper corporate governance, Ms. Vance?"
Elena's jaw clenched, but she nodded curtly. "One hour, Mr. Keppler. Not a minute more."
As the room began to clear, Cassius caught sight of Clarissa lingering by the door, her face a mask of cool indifference. Their eyes met, and for a moment, Cassius saw a flicker of something - regret? Triumph? - before she turned and walked away.
