Chapter 27
Cynthia had originally planned to put Mason in bed earlier and then retreat to her own room to avoid encountering Zachary. But now, standing there, she was a picture of embarrassment and discomfort.
If she remembered correctly, she had been terribly rude and out of line with him last night.
She lowered her head, speaking so softly it was almost a whisper, "I'm sorry. I was drunk last night."
Zachary hadn't expected her to be in his room. Looking at her awkward and uneasy expression, he removed his suit jacket and set it aside, saying, "You're right to apologize. It's the first time a woman has ever harassed me."
His voice, casual as it was, carried an edge. Whether teasing or reproaching, it left Cynthia feeling embarrassed and flustered.
She felt mortified, wishing now that she hadn't apologized at all. Her attempt to make amends only made things more awkward.
