Men Are Nothing But Trouble
Cara seemed to be in a trance.
She let herself be hauled away without putting up a fight.
By the time I extricated myself from the crowd and stumbled to the front door, it was too late.
I managed to catch a fleeting glimpse of Cara being bundled into a white Mercedes-Maybach.
It pulled away from the kerb before I could catch the plate number.
‘Shit.’
I fumbled for my phone in my pocketbook.
Cara called me before I could get hold of the police.
‘Cara! What the hell’s going on? Are you okay? Where are you?’
‘I’m fine. You should go home. I’ll call you later.’
She hung up.
Her voice was calm and she did not sound under duress.
Still, I was worried.
I called again.
She must have switched off her phone.
I stood on the kerb, my heart still pounding.
My brain was sluggish, the result of chugging alcohol for the past two hours.
I had to check the call log again to make sure I had not hallucinated the call.
I replayed the scene in my head.
Cara was a feisty gal.
She could give as good as she go
