Ultimatum
‘No, it’s okay.’ I shook my head.
I had to face it sooner or later.
‘There’s my girl, courageous to the bone.’ He kissed my cheek. ‘Just remember, sticks and stones may break your bones—’
‘But words can never hurt me, yeah, I know.’
I wished I could believe it.
‘Be brave, baby. Call me if anything happens.’
I kissed him, forced a smile, got out of the car and waved him goodbye.
‘Boss.’ Maddison ran up to me as soon as I stepped inside the café.
The concern on her face was genuine.
I was relieved to find the café empty of customers.
It was early yet.
‘I, ah, I saw the news…’ The manager looked conflicted. ‘Are you, um, are you okay?’
‘I’m fine.’ I wasn’t, but there was no point letting my mood drag everybody else down.
‘I know a good lawyer if you want to sue the websites for libel.’ She reached into her pocket and produced her phone. ‘I got his contact here.’
‘No need.’ I smiled wanly. ‘What they reported is true. Thanks, anyway.’
