CHAPTER FORTY FOUR – THE WAY OUT
Rebecca's heart leaped. "Really? How?"
"I have... connections," Luca said carefully. "I could help you get out of Gilda's Bay, maybe even out of the country. How does Italy sound?"
Rebecca's mind reeled at the possibility. Italy? It seemed too good to be true. "But... how? Why would you do that for me?"
Luca smiled, reaching up to gently brush a strand of hair from her face. "Because I care about you, Rebecca. I've wanted to help you since I first saw you in that bakery."
Rebecca felt a warmth spread through her at his touch, momentarily forgetting all her troubles. "What about Irina?" she asked, hating how small and jealous her voice sounded.
A shadow passed over Luca's face. "That's... complicated. But right now, let's focus on helping you."
He explained his plan. There was a warehouse on the outskirts of town where he conducted some of his "business." If Rebecca could meet him there the next day, he could arrange for her safe passage to Italy.
