I sat there quietly, patiently waiting for his response.
“I…I don't know what you might be thinking right now, but trust me, it isn’t what it seems.”
I nodded. “I know, and that’s why I’m asking you to explain it to me.”
He breathed deeply and tilted his head as he glanced at the paper in his hand again. “It’s Charles, your… friend.”
I raised my eyebrows. “I know it’s him. This shouldn’t be an issue, but I’m a chronic overthinker. It’s the only thing I got from my Father.”
“No, you’re right to be worried,” he replied, then paused as his eyes found mine. “But you’re slightly worried about the wrong things, Marie.”
I could clearly see the worry in his eyes, but was it for himself or me?
“Charles and I got into another altercation recently, and it was way worse than the one we had before.”
“Okay,” I replied softly, pointing at the paper. “But that doesn’t explain what…”
“I know… it all ties together, though.” He sighed again, then got up and made his way toward the stairs.
