I was just finishing up Caleb's snack when the doorbell rang. I glanced at the clock—2:30 p.m. Who could it be at this hour? I didn't expect any visitors, so I wiped my hands on a dish towel and headed for the door.
Opening it, I found Taylor standing there, a little winded and with an awkward smile. He had a light layer of sweat on his forehead, his clothes rumpled as if he'd been rushing. "Hey, Marie," he said, looking past me into the apartment. "Is now a good time?"
"Taylor!" I exclaimed, stepping aside to let him in. "What a surprise. Of course, come in."
He entered and took a deep breath, clearly trying to compose himself. "I hope I'm not interrupting."
I shook my head, guiding him to the living room, where Caleb was playing with his toys. "Not at all. Caleb's just enjoying his snack."
Taylor's eyes softened when he looked at Caleb. He crouched down, a small smile forming as he ruffled Caleb's hair. "Hey, little buddy. How's it going?"
