CHAPTER 23: LEAVING FOR GOOD
MARIE
With my hand resting on my swollen, heavy belly from carrying the baby, I stood in front of the mirror. My face was framed by my short black hair that fell just above my shoulders, but fatigue had dulled the usual sparkle in my deep black eyes.
Even though I'd always been told how beautiful my smile was, my tall, slender figure suddenly seemed all belly, and I couldn't find the energy to smile. Not with everything going on.
I breathed deeply, trying to quiet the raging storm of feelings inside me. The anxiety and the fear felt excessive. My mind was racing with uncontrollable thoughts, and I could feel my heart pounding. It was intolerable to stay here, in this city, where everything made me think of Damian and all the darkness that accompanied him. My anxiety was getting the better of me, and I couldn't help but worry that the baby was suffering from all of my tension and stress.
