That night, I went to bed with a hollow pit in my stomach, my muscles tense with hunger. But I couldn’t bring myself to eat a single bite of the food Julie had prepared. The thought of offending her gnawed at me, yet the idea of eating her meal was even more unpalatable. I tossed and turned, replaying our conversation from earlier that evening.
"Damian, please, just eat something," Julie had pleaded, her voice soft and almost trembling. She stood in the kitchen doorway, clutching the edge of the counter as if it were the only thing keeping her from falling apart. Her eyes, wide and shiny, darted between the untouched plate and me.
I sighed deeply, rubbing the back of my neck, my patience wearing thin. “Julie, I’m night fasting.”
“Night fasting?” She blinked, her brows furrowing in confusion. “You never fast.”
“Well, I’m starting now,” I said, sharper than intended, as my hand instinctively clenched into a fist. “I need to shed some weight.”
