Chapter 4 Two Wrongs Make a Right
His question stumped Hua Sheng.
Of course, the Jiangs were not in need of money. In fact, they had enough reserves to support a few more generations.
The Jiang family was at the peak of its prosperity and the other three Great Families were trying to catch up to it.
There were rumors that the jade bangle that Madam Jiang wore was an extremely rare piece of jewelry worth tens of millions of dollars.
As such, Jiang Liu was completely uninterested in the "expensive gift" that Hua Sheng had promised him.
She was starting to regret having made a deal with this man.
She should have chosen to be disgraced. The entire incident would blow over anyway; why did she choose to do things the hard way?
From how he spoke earlier on, she had a feeling that this man would not be discouraged easily. Indeed, he had proved her right.
"Why aren't you answering me, young lady?" he pressed on. "What a jerk... Obviously, he knows that he's got me in a bind here, yet he's asking for a reply? I've never seen anyone like this."
Even so, Hua Sheng managed to reply to him calmly. "What sort of reward would you like then, Young Master Jiang?" she asked.
"You'll give me whatever I want?" Jiang Liu asked, increasingly interested in how things would turn out.
"I'm not that capable. However, I'm willing to try to satisfy you, within my means," Hua Sheng replied bluntly, unwilling to engage this man in a war of words.
"I think... what I lack now... is a wife."
Hua Sheng trembled upon hearing him, vaguely sensing that something bad was about to happen.
Her worst fears soon came true. "I'm already 27 this year, but I've never been with anyone, and the tabloids even gossiped about my sexual orientation in the past. This hurt my reputation a little, so I need a wife to safeguard it and to drive those rumors away. Also, I believe you're aware that my wife can't be someone ordinary. You're from the Hua family, and our families have been friends with each other since a long time ago. If you ask me... two wrongs can make a right, and we should remain married to each other... What do you think?"
What was most infuriating was that he even mimicked Hua Sheng's manner of speech.
It was obvious that this man was doing this on purpose. However, Hua Sheng could not go against him right now; after all, he had just done a huge favor for her.
Hua Sheng sighed lightly. "Many thanks for thinking so highly of me, Young Master Jiang. However, I'm a nobody and hold no weight. Furthermore, I don't think that I'm capable of becoming a good wife to you. I think we should forget about it."
"If I say you have what it takes, then you do," Jiang Liu replied confidently.
"You're such an exceptional person, Young Master Jiang. I believe there's an abundance of women that you can choose from, right? Our family isn't the only reputable household with a bachelorette... Why do you have to put me in such a spot?"
It couldn't be more obvious how unwilling Hua Sheng was.
However, Jiang Liu was not angry at all. Instead, he began laughing. "Are you trying to burn your bridges now, young lady?"
"I wouldn't dare."
"You're claiming that I've put you in a spot... Why didn't you think about my feelings when you singled me out during the banquet earlier on?" Jiang Liu asked, lifting his eyebrows.
Hua Sheng remained silent.
"All right, all right, I was wrong to point you out...
"Why did I had to choose you, of all people?"
She was well aware of how influential this young man was.
Besides, she never had any intention to cling on to an influential person anyway.
"Aren't I creating a problem for myself here?
"Looks like I'm not going to be able to brush him off now..."
Hua Sheng took a deep breath and shut her eyes gently. "So... what do you want, Jiang Liu?"
Her true nature was revealed now; she had addressed Jiang Liu directly by name. She wasn't a frail damsel to be rescued, but rather, she seemed more like a wild kitten who had previously hidden its claws.
