7 A Fairytale?!
A fairytale was the rumor but then it had to pass through a lot of problems for it to be referred to as that.
“We need to talk!”Steve said.
“You sound worried, is everything okay?” Anna asked.
“I am afraid it is not, you have to leave tonight,” he said resignedly.
Anna packed a few clothes and then Steve hurriedly booked her a flight. She was supposed to leave that night as the king had sent out his son to get her. She was going to be taken in for a long time but since Steve still had his people working for the king, they passed the information to him.
“Well, before I go…” Anna started but Steve didn't want to get closer to him. There were so many things happening and he could not try to be calm and cozy.
“Not tonight, of course we will make arrangements. Right now what is important is your safety.” he said and anna smiled. He really cared about her.
Anna was going to miss him and Steve would be missing her daily as well but then he didn't want to worsen things at the time. Steve thought that it would bring issues for him if he dared to show his emotions towards her now that they were already on the wanted list.
Steve was afraid of what would happen but then when he was about to leave his room, he heard someone whisper something in his ears. He turned and when he did, someone he knew so well lay next to him and kissed him on his lips and then left before he could see her. He knew of course it was Anna and what she was doing was playing mind games. He had already asked to get ready as her flight was scheduled for 2am.
A few weeks ago, she had been doing the same, however that time was different since no one was after them. Steve remembered how everything had been so sweet as Anna kept appearing and disappearing. The fun part was he knew who it was but he played along.
Interestingly, Steve knew who it was just by the smell of her skin but pretended not to. Days passed and then weeks, until the secret admirer got enough courage to face him. And now, it had brought so many problems to them but he was certain it was going to be over soon.
Sweet words of love echoed through his mind…just the way Anna had said them.
“I know I should not be telling you this considering you have taken the role of a parent in my life but so you know, I think of you differently. I see you as a future husband, I dream of you and I wish you would think of me the same way,” she said.
Steve remembered how he was shocked beyond words. Even though he knew Anna admired him way before she even confessed it, he never thought she would get enough courage to spit it out. To him, it was something she would never speak about but contrary to his expectations, she showed up and surprised him.
Steve remembered how everything went down that day. Anna had been busy with school and he had just returned from a work trip in the company of a woman he was planning to marry. Rumors had it that they were even engaged but then all that came to an end when Anna expressed her feelings to him and made him change his mind regarding who he was going to marry.
Despite the warnings about intermarrying with plains lineage, Steve was tempted to try out a relationship with Anna knowing very well what they were about to do would be a problem but they still went ahead and started a relationship. It didn't sit well with the fiancee and after sometime she left him.
Anna had never forgotten how much she cried when she learned about her affair with Steve. She had been promised a lifetime but then when steve learned about Anna’s feelings towards him, he asked her off. There was no need to keep wasting her time.
“There are so many people you can be with. I think I found what my heart desires and I want it to be that way. Please leave.” Steve spoke. The woman was mad and disappointed too. After the betrayal she left the highlands and never returned. But then again, when the king learned about Anna and Steve’s relationship, ut was rumored that she had informed the king but there was no one to back it up.
Life was good as the love birds went out for dates but everytime they did, Steve would prefer specific places. They were places he would never go with her and when she asked his reasons for doing that, Steve would come up with excuses.
“I just don't want people to start talking before we tie the knot!” he said but the truth was, he was afraid of the king knowing about the affair but since the woman was heartbroken, Steve believed she was behind the whole incident.
“You don't have to sweat over it. I am leaving and everything should be back to normal before we know it,” Anna said while holding Steve’s hands but Steve smiled softly.
“I should be telling you this. And by the way, what you should be doing right now, is taking photos of me and you. I know you will miss me but tell you what, i will bring you back or join you wherever you will be,” he promised.
Just then his phone rang and he went to pick up. He left the room slowly leaving Anna staring at her. His behavior was suspicious and Anna started doubting him.
“Why are answering the call from outside? I thought we were a pair what just happened? Do we have secrets now?’ she had so many questions but Steve begged her to give her time.
“It is a work call, I will be back, just give me a minute,” he said and slowly closed the door behind him.
Steve went outside the room and answered his call. He spent thirty minutes on the call and when he finally finished, it was almost time. The time that Anna had requested to spend with him was finished and now they had to leave before Anna missed her flight.
"This is temporary, right?” she asked resignedly.
“Of course, it is,” Steve assured.
“You said, its going to be a fairytale, yeah?’ she wondered.
“Yes sweetheart, are you doubting me?” he asked.
“No,I just want to hear your lies once more,” she said and then pulled her bags down the stairs.
“Come on, you know I love you and I would never lie to you. That was a work call. You are my life and I am going to prove that to you, just wait,” he said.
“I saw the way you looked at the phone when the call came in. You don't have to lie to me but if you insist, at least there is one thing you can do for me. Give me the phone and I will confirm if indeed it's a work call,” she dared him.
Steve refused.
It was at this time that Anna knew she had to do one thing; wait!
