Chapter 4 Chapter 4
"So, you're really going to enter this competition?" Dylan asked taking a bite of his pizza.
"Yep. I really want to do this." I answered.
"Girl, good for you. Just know that we will help in any way." Dylan said and I nodded.
"Yes we will. We are behind you one hundred percent." Amber added.
"I know guys. Thanks." I smiled at the both of them, then took a bite out of my baloney sandwich.
"What are friends for?" Amber said smiling back a me.
It was Monday and we were in the cafeteria eating lunch. I had told my friends about the competition on Friday night and they were extremely happy for me. On Saturday, we went to the movies and just like that, the weekend was over.
"I can't believe it. My best friend, the dance champion." Dylan said.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I might not win." I stated to Dylan.
"Yeah, but let's look at it the other way as well. You might win," Amber put in. "And no matter what, you will still know that you did your best."
I smiled, "You're right."
"Of course I am." Amber said and I slapped her on the arm.
"Hey! That's physical abuse." Amber rubbed her arm and I rolled my eyes. Typical Amber, always exaggerating. We continued to eat our lunch, then the lunch bell ring. We got up and Amber and I went to English. We went to our seats and sat down. A few minutes later, Ethan came and sat beside me. I turned to him and gave him a glare.
"Why are you sitting here?" I asked. He leaned back in the chair and put his hands behind his head.
"Can't I sit anywhere I want to now?" He smirked. Not bothering to answer to that, I turned around in my seat, ignoring him. I was talking to Amber, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I spun around to look at him.
"What?" I demanded.
"Can I barrow a pen?"
"I don't have any. Now leave me alone." I said.
"Now, now, you don't have to lie. I'm looking at your pencil case filled with pens right now." He said shifting his eyes to my desk. I looked down on my desk and saw that he was right. My pencil case sat on my desk and it was open. Why did I forget to put back my pencil case in my bag pack? I heard Amber laughing beside me.
I sighed in defeat and took out a pen and throw it at him. "Here. You happy now?" I asked.
"Nope, but if you give me a kiss..." He said leaning closer. I used my hand to shove his face away from me.
"Never. Gonna. Happen." I said, slowly punctuating each word. He was about to say something else when I heard Amber's voice.
"Stop flirting you two. Ms. Knead is here." I turned to look at her and she winked at me grinning. I was about to say something about her stupid comment, but Ms. Knead started her class. I just gave her another glare and turned towards the teacher.
School had ended and I was driving to the address that I got on the website, to sign up for the competition. It took over one hour to get there, but I finally pulled up in front of a large building. A big sign over the door read: 'McDonnell's Dance Studio' in bright gold letter. I parked my car and got out. I went up to the glass double door and pushed it open.
I looked around the room and notice a woman sitting at a front desk. She was dressed professionally and her hair was caught up in a high bun. I walked up to her, but she was busy tapping away on her computer.
"Hello." I said. I looked at the name pin on her dark blue top and it had M. Reed on it. She looked up at me and gave me a polite smile.
"Hello, how may I help you?" She fixed the glass that was sliding off her face.
"I'm here to sign up for the dance competition that will be held here in March." I explained.
"Oh yes. Please give me a moment." She pulled open the top drawer on her desk and took out a large book and a brochure from a stack. She opened the book to a page that had 'Names of contestants' in capital letters written at the top of the page and turned the book to me. "Write your name here and sign please."
Numbers were counting up to twelve beside each name. It seems like they were only taking twelve persons. So far they had seven person because from eight down, the spaces were blank. Thank God I came here on time.
The lady then took up one of the brochures and hand it to me, "Also, read this brochure. It has all the information about the competition and the rules."
I wrote my name beside number eight in the book and took the brochure from her, "Thank you." She smiled at me again and nodded. I returned her smile and left the building. I got in my car and drove home with a smile on my face.
Actually signing up for this dance competition made it seem so real now. I can't believe I'll be competing in a dance competition!
The next day after school, I changed in the locker room and went up to Ms. Wilson's office at the back of the dance room. I knocked on the door lightly and she looked up at me.
"Ms. Wilson, I want to talk to you before class." I said.
"Come on in, Jessica." She indicated for me to enter with her hands. I went in and stood in front of her desk.
"Ms. Wilson, I'm just letting you know that I took your advice and I registered for the dance competition." I informed her.
"That's great, Jessica. I'm so glad you did." She got up from behind her table and came around to me. "Listen, you don't have to come to class three times a week anymore. You should spend as much time as possible practicing."
"That's a great idea. I will only come on Tuesdays then."
She nodded in affirmation, then went back to her desk and took out a key from the top drawer and came back to me. "Here. This is the key to the other dance room. You can use it to practice anytime you want."
"Really? Thank you so much, Ms. Wilson." I took the key from her and smiled at her offer.
"No problem and good luck."
"Thanks." I walked from the office to warm up with the other students. I decided to tell them about me entering the competition and they were excited for me. The other students and I were very close, so I know that they would support me. We were like a close family.
A few minutes later, Ms. Wilson came out of her office and class began.
