Horror movies from my childhood taught me that the darkest creatures lurked in shadowy corners.
Despite my exhaustion, sleep eluded me. Instead, my mind kicked into overdrive, turning the dark tiles and tangled webs into the set of a horror flick.
The more I imagined, the scarier it got. A ghostly woman in red with wild black hair and a twisted face haunted my thoughts, sending a shiver down my spine.
Then, out of nowhere, a hand clasped mine. I froze, turned, and found myself looking into Idris' composed gaze. He had not slept either. In the dim light, his features were unfairly striking.
"What's wrong?" His voice was low and rough, missing the iciness of the day. It was replaced with a hint of warmth.
I shook my head, lips tight. I whispered back, "Why are you still awake?"
He did not answer me, but his eyes, steady and knowing, swept over the dark roof tiles and the cobwebs that strung between the beams. "No need to worry. They won't come crashing down."
