As she talked, she was busy packing up the kid's stuff—clothes, toys, the works.
She then stepped out of the bathroom while muttering, "I was all set to whisk the kid away for a quick DNA test, but someone beat me to the punch. Now, all I've got to work with is what's left behind in this room."
I trailed after her silently, my eyes sweeping over the place. Not much had changed. The house's bones were the same, just a few tweaks here and there. Alice, it seemed, had not bothered to switch things up much since she moved in.
Emily must have caught on to my quiet mood. She spun around, her eyes drilling into me. "Okay, Yvette Spill it. What's the real reason you're here? Don't give me that line about walking down memory lane. I'm not buying it."
I met her gaze for a second before looking away. "Let's just get out of here first. If we hang around and Alice and Maxwell show up, they'll pin the kid's disappearance on us in a heartbeat."
