I gave a small shake of my head and a weak smile. "I figured you'd be at the police station by now," I said, cutting right to the chase.
He hesitated, then managed a wry smile. "Managed to dodge the cops with a few buddies in Hartfield," he admitted, trying to sound nonchalant.
I had no idea why he was here, and just as I was about to ask, he blurted out, "Ms. Scott, Luke, he..."
"He took a tumble off a cliff and didn't make it," I said flatly, as if I was talking about the weather instead of a friend's tragic end.
His face froze for a second before he managed to get the words out. "I know..." He hesitated, then blurted, "I came to give you something."
Watching him dig through his worn-out jacket pocket, he produced a bunch of wrinkled papers and a grubby little bag. Guys' pockets are like black holes, I swear. I was taken aback by the sheer amount of stuff he was pulling out.
He glanced at the crumpled mess in his hands, a mix of embarrassment and apology washing over his face
