"No way," I said, shaking my head. I bit my lip again, the question bursting out before I could stop it. "Our wedding is right around the corner. Don't you have a million other things to do?"
There had been a ton of Eastern Ollibery stuff on his plate, plus the whole mess with the mountain goods getting torched. Kenneth had already been circling Hartfield's stuff like a shark, and after a few setbacks, there was no way he would just let it slide. Yet, there he was, hanging out with me day after day. Something did not add up.
He just looked at me, all casual, and said, "Nothing's as important as you. I just want to hang out more, take you around Mandala, and check out all the cool little knick-knacks on the streets. Is that so bad?"
Deep down, I could not shake the feeling he was keeping secrets, even though his words had left me speechless for a second.
I could not puzzle it out, so I decided to let it go. The wedding was coming, and whatever was going to happen would happen.
