The cops had been polite, just asking Chester to come to the station to help with their investigation. If he was not involved, they would let him go. Chester seemed all too willing to go along with them.

The cops had left, and Lucas and I hopped into the car and headed back to the castle.
As we drove, I stared out the window at the blur of passing landscapes, a mix of feelings swirling inside me. The statues were gone. When the cops had emerged, however, I had not caught even a glimpse of the bodyguard's body. It was like he had vanished, or worse, like he had been found yet nobody gave a damn.
"What's on your mind?" Lucas asked, nudging me. I must've been zoning out, lost in thought.
I shook off the haze and met his eyes. "Is the bodyguard really dead?"
Lucas arched an eyebrow, his voice cool. "Chester put three bullets in his chest." It was his way of saying the guy did not stand a chance.
