When Linda spoke again, she lowered her voice so only she and Alicia could hear.
"So what? You might have that marriage certificate now, but in a month, the name ‘Alicia’ will be replaced by mine."
Alicia met Linda’s gaze head-on.
"You’re just like your mother—always eager to take what others discard. But what if I don’t feel like signing the divorce papers? As long as Duchess Cartie supports me, there won’t be any divorce. Then where will that leave you?"
"You!" Linda was so furious that words failed her. Her hand raised high in the air, but Alicia stood firm, watching Linda’s anger with a mocking smile.
Taking a deep breath, Linda forced a smile, though her eyes remained cold.
"I’d advise you not to be so ungrateful. If you leave voluntarily now, I might persuade Charles to give you a little extra in the divorce settlement."
Alicia laughed, casually adjusting Charles's tie as if she were unfazed.
