Chapter 95 Not of High Standing
Elinor examined Edmond, trying to discern the truth behind his intent gaze. "What do you want from me?" she finally asked with obvious suspicion in her tone. Their rapport was cursory at best, mere acquaintances at the courtesy of Jaxson. It was highly unusual for Edmond to seek her out, especially at the manor.
Edmond, astute as he was, caught the mistrust in Elinor's eyes. He sighed, "Both you and Jaxson have this distrusting look when it comes to me. I’m reliable, you know. Can’t either of you give me a little trust?"
His words caught Elinor off guard. It was surprising that she and Jaxson shared the same sentiment about someone. "If both of us find you untrustworthy, maybe there's some truth to it. Cut the small talk and tell me, why did you come looking for me? We’re not close enough for you to make a special trip to the manor."
In general, Elinor preferred to keep her distance from Jaxson, and even more so with Edmond. Her tone was as frosty as ever.
