CHAPTER SEVENTY-FOUR - A Test of Loyalty
Claire nodded, unable to speak through her tears.
Her parents moved to either side of her, enveloping her in a tight hug. As she sobbed into her mother's shoulder, Claire felt a mix of grief and relief. Grief for the relationship she'd thought she had, and relief at finally admitting how she truly felt.
"It's okay, sweetheart," her father murmured, stroking her hair. "We're here. We've got you."
As her tears subsided, Claire pulled back, wiping her eyes. "I'm sorry," she said, gesturing at the elaborate brunch spread. "I wanted this to be perfect. I wanted to show you that everything was okay."
Her mother cupped Claire's face in her hands. "Oh, honey. You don't have to pretend with us. We love you, no matter what."
Claire nodded, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders. "I know. I love you too."
Her father cleared his throat. "Claire, I know you love Mason. But you need to ask yourself if this is the kind of relationship you want. If this is making you happy."
