Shawn shrugged. "Well, when I do, you can pitch in for me then."
"And if I've spent all my money by then?"
"Then, I just won't date," he replied.
Myra, who was still hopeful that Shawn would marry and bring her a few great-grandchildren someday, chimed in, "Shawn, it's about time you start thinking of settling down."
Shawn glanced at Hazel before replying, "Career first, family later."
Around noon, the same family from yesterday showed up again, still hoping to resolve their issues. It happened to be lunchtime, so they joined everyone around the long dining table.
Annie, angling to sit beside Shawn, moved toward the spot, but Hazel quickly stood, shifted, and took the seat beside Shawn instead. Now without a place to sit, Annie stood there awkwardly.
"Mom, I… I'm not hungry. You go ahead. I'll just skip lunch," she said, feigning disappointment and hoping that Lizzy would step in.
