"Women shouldn't be playing games. It's not good for you," James said dismissively.
"But I want to play! Everyone else knows how to play," Abigail protested.
James let out a resigned sigh. "Alright. I'll teach you later."
With that brief interruption settled, James returned to his book, while Abigail flipped through her novel beside him. Neither of them spoke much, but Abigail would occasionally sneak glances at him, her heart feeling warm and light.
James noticed her peeking out of the corner of his eye, though he did not turn his head to meet her gaze. Still, knowing she was watching made him feel unexpectedly pleased.
When the lunch break rolled around, James borrowed the book he had not finished, and Abigail, taking advantage of his library card, borrowed a book too.
"James, are we going home for lunch?" Abigail asked.
"Nope," James said, slinging an arm over her shoulders. "I just got paid, so I'm taking you out to eat."
