Sensing their uneasiness, John cleared his throat. "So, Dad," he said, "how's the divestment process going?"
With a glint of pride in his eyes, William straightened in his seat. "We've severed ties with all the corrupt corporations," he said. "It's been a long road, but we're committed to making things right."
Marie arched an eyebrow in skepticism as she observed them. She was nevertheless plagued by a sense of betrayal and a persistent mistrust about their genuineness.
Elizabeth stretched out, her fingers hovering over the table as if feeling her thoughts. "Marie," she murmured in a regretful tone, "we realize that what we did to you hurt and caused a lot of suffering. We sincerely apologize, but there are no justifications."
A thick stillness fell across the space. John gave Marie a discreet squeeze on the hand under the table.
